Email Safety

  • Be very wary of opening emails from senders you do not recognise as these can contain viruses and other harmful programmes.
  • Never open attachments with .exe, .vbs and .scr extensions. Only open attachments with .zip and .rar extensions when you are 100% sure you know what’s inside the file.
  • Be very wary of emails requesting financial and personal information – contact the organisation before taking any action.
  • The display name of an email can be faked – always examine the email address.

File Backups

  • Always make regular backups of important documents to portable devices e.g. CD or USB drive.
  • Before installing or upgrading your software and operating system make sure you save all of your files to an external hard drive or CD
  • If you suspect a problem with your computer carry out a backup as soon as possible.
  • Backups must be offline to be safe from ransomware, that means not connected to your computer or network.
